The film "adaptation" didn't help its cultural cachet either, especially since it took the tropeyness of the books and somehow made it worse.Īt some point I should check out Paolini's new book, and maybe reread the Inheritance cycle again. It didn't help that it went from a trilogy to a tetralogy (after being marketed as the Inheritance trilogy for years) and it took a decent amount of time for the final book to release.

And like a lot of other YA, it ended up stuck in the shadow of Harry Potter. I remember vividly the vitriol it got online, even getting entire communities dedicated to riffing on it (which somehow still exist, talk about living rent-free in someone's head!). The entire idea of the dwarven capital of Tronjheim being a mountain of marble inside a massive mountain was just glorious to imagine. It does evolve to be less of a Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/Hero's Journey hybrid after the first book, and what original material it had was honestly really cool. Gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old. It's incredibly tropey, but it's done so earnestly and without irony. Fifteen-year-old Eragon believes that he is merely a poor farm boyuntil his destiny as a Dragon Rider is revealed. I think of it as a perfect gateway novel to high fantasy, especially for younger readers who might not have gotten into Tolkien. I have a lot of nostalgia for the Inheritance Cycle. (A side note that might be relevant, I did read these when I was young but didn’t notice/wasn’t able to articulate most of these things until later.

To me, the books felt info-dumpy all the way to the end.

He also started writing as a teenager, which doesn’t automatically HAVE to make it bad, but it is very rare for someone so young to have developed a cohesive writing style (those of you who like the series would probably say he did, but I would respectfully disagree) and I don’t think he had the maturity to understand the far-reaching lengths of his plot in order to present all 4 books in the best way. The length also seemed unnecessary to me for the amount of actual plot-relevant events that happened.Īlso, to my knowledge, the only reason this series was published at all was that the author had rich parents. The writing to me was excessive to the point of being laughable, and I felt it was written this way as an attempt to overcompensate for the flatness of most characters and to sound “smart” and “sophisticated” to people who don’t know the author was a teenager (more on that later). I wanted to like the series so bad because of the world, all the languages and magic and travel were riveting, but personally, I do not think it is well-written.
